The right machine for a residential job is usually the smallest one that can still do the work efficiently. Bigger isn't better when it means tearing up a lawn to reach the back yard.
A mini excavator (3–6 ton) fits through a 4-foot gate, runs on rubber tracks, digs to about 10 feet, and does very little damage to lawn and landscaping. It's the right pick for basement walkouts, pool digs, drainage repairs behind the house, small foundations and tight-access work of any kind.
A full-size excavator (14 tons and up) digs past 15 feet, handles rock and heavy material, and moves a lot of earth quickly. It's the right pick for full basement digs, pond excavation, major site cuts, and anywhere access allows.
The mistake is bringing a full-size machine to a job where the mini would work. You save nothing on machine time and you spend it all on repairing what got destroyed getting the big machine into position.
When we quote a job we tell you which machine we're bringing and why. If a smaller machine will do the work well, we'd rather use it.
